Herbal Medicine is an important part of treatment the world over. In China, the theory and practice of herbal prescriptions has been a continually successful part of the country's medical history for thousands of years and in the last 60 years has made an impression upon private medical practice in the rest of the world. Herbal Medicine in China and the East is not only a complex traditional art form, but rapidly becoming an expanding area for scientific pharmacological research and development into new medicines.
The theoretical basis is the same for Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) as it is for Acupuncture and Tuina: balance of the whole, wellness of the body and mind.
In China, the total of listed herbs in the Materia Medica (list of medicinal herbs), numbers approximately 20,000, with 300 herbs being the most common in everday use, including the 3 pictured below; Cinnamon, Ginger and Orange Peel which are used to improve circulation and aid digestion.
CHM can have a very important role to play in the treatment of a large number of conditions. In China and other countries across the East, CHM is used to treat a lot of disease and illnesses within the setting of private clinics and large hospitals. It is used either as a stand alone treament, in combination with conventional medicine or Acupuncture and Tuina.
Insurance companies in Taiwan pay for CHM treatment and across Korea, Japan and China large hospital wards are dedicated to the use of CHM as the only treatment for their patients. In the UK, CHM is in regular use in smaller private clinics, used to treat a number of different conditions.
The most commonly treated conditions are listed below:
Skin diseases; Eczema, Psoriasis and Acne
Gastrointestinal issues; IBS, Diarrhoea and Constipation
Gynaecological problems; Infertility, Subfertility, Irregular menstruation, Endometriosis and Paiful periods
Respiratory issues; Asthma, Chronic cough, Sinusitis and Allergic Rhinitis (Hay fever)
